The Apprentice Ship Cup – Voyage 2

In 2014 MAST is hosting ‘The Apprentices Ship Cup’ with the support of both Private and Public sector employers. This regatta will provide the opportunity to challenge, stretch and develop North West apprentices in a challenging but safe environment to compete for the Apprentices Ship Cup’. Each business will have a tall ship allocated for their apprentices to compete on. At the end of the regatta there will be an awards dinner to be held at Hope University Campus in Childwall.


Aims of the Apprentices Ship Cup

The experience gained through participating in the Cup will empower the young apprentices and help them discover and unlock their true potential.

The Cup will:-

  • Promote young people’s active citizenship
  • Develop solidarity and promote tolerance among young people
  • Foster mutual understanding between apprentices from different organisations and backgrounds
  • Provide an alternative learning environment


Those taking part will build the following skills and benefits:

  • Self confidence
  • Teamwork
  • Respect for selves and others
  • Problem solving
  • Leadership & Communication
  • Social and life skills
  • Practical sailing, seamanship and navigation skills and the opportunity to use them.


The Apprentices will sail as voyage crew and be divided into seagoing watches, each led by an experienced and qualified Watch Leader. Each watch will be involved in:

  • Steering & Helmsmanship
  • Climbing the Mast & Rigging
  • Setting the sails
  • Keeping Navigation watch
  • Domestic duties such as Cooking & Cleaning the ship



All Apprentices will be provided with a Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Log Book and will be tasked with completing the various modules set out in the RYA syllabus.


On completion and sign off of by the Ships Master, the RYA Start Yachting and Competent Crew certificates can be awarded. This is the starting point for the RYA Day Skipper and Tall Ship Watch Leader qualifications.


The voyage also qualifies for the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Awards (Residential) for those apprentices participating in the D of E scheme
