The Arctic Challenge: British Industry’s involvement in sustainable Development

Venue: Albert Dock, Liverpool L3 4AQ

Audience: International

Theme: Maritime, Logistics & Energy

This  is a follow up seminar by DWF and  UK TI following the very successful ‘Mining in the High North , sustainable opportunities for UK businesses’ seminar they staged in London on 18 March 2014. This seminar will present a panel of speakers who will reflect on the risks and opportunities in the region, the current concerns, specifically as they relate to oil and gas, marine, and mining, and demonstrate how UK companies are assisting responsible operations.  There will be an international audience but one which also draws on key UK skills and those of the North West. UK business undoubtedly has opportunities, particularly in respect of the skills acquired in the North Sea and also the legal, insurance, and finance specialisations which are very strong in the UK.

Additionally the Arctic presents British research, through the National Environmental Research Council (NERC) and other bodies with huge opportunities to work with Arctic Industry. DWF and UK TI are extremely active in these areas. The target audience will be Arctic participants (some operators from overseas), insurance representatives (60 % of Energy insurance is written in the UK), marine organisations and operators based in the UK. Construction companies will also be very involved and trading companies that will be involved in the marine and energy sector.

DWF will invite contacts known  through their work on the Arctic Marine Best Practice Declaration, Lloyd’s of London’s 2012 Arctic Report, their work at the Lloyds’ Informa Arctic Conference in St John’s Newfoundland in October 2013 and Helsinki in 2014, and work at the IMO in relation to the Polar code, as well as the recent Artic  Mining Conference with UK TI. In relation to UK research in Arctic operations in the energy, marine, and mining sectors all types of research is required from Environmental to geological and so on working with these sectors. DWF will be supported by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office’s National Environmental Research Council and their contacts, the Foundation for Science and Technology, and UK TI, Including the Nordic Baltic region and North America.

A report will be prepared by UK TI and DWF after the Seminar which will be disseminated through all UK TI channels.
